<p>It is intended to provide a process for producing sugar and ethanol wherein energy to be consumed in the step of producing sugar and ethanol, etc. can be almost completely covered by energy obtained by burning sugar cane bagasse without causing any loss in sugar yield. Namely, a process for producing sugar and a useful substance from sugarcane which comprises: (a) the step of producing press juice and bagasse from sugarcane; (b) the step of producing sugar and waste molasses from the press juice; and (c) the step of producing energy and a useful substance from the press juice, the waste molasses and the bagasse obtained in the steps (a) and (b); characterized by the sugarcane containing 15% by mass of more fibers in the stem, the dry yield thereof per unit area being 40 t/ha/year or larger, and 90% or more of the energy required in the all steps of the above-described production process being covered by the energy obtained by burning the bagasse.</p> |
