Materials comprise a polymer mass, consisting primarily of open holes, and in which the surface of the internal walls of the holes is coated with a binder layer contg. a quantity of a fire-suppressing agent which is solid up to 100 degrees C but releases an inflammable vapour at temps. below the ignition pt. of the polymer. The polymer can be polyurethane or polystyrene whilst the fire-suppressing agents can be ammonium sulphate, urea, Bi hydroxide, boric acid, Al2(OH)3.6H2O etc.
