[Also in Divisions B2, C4, C5 and D1] A composition suitable for use in the treatment of fibrous material comprises a colloidal suspension of a silsesquioxane having the unit general formula RSiO 3/2 in which R is a methyl, ethyl, vinyl, phenyl or 3,3,3-trifluoro propyl radical, the silsesquioxane having a particle size of 10-1000 Š. The colloidal suspension may be prepared by adding a silane having the general formula RSi(OR<SP>11</SP>) 3 in which R<SP>11</SP> is an alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms or a group to a mixture of water and an anionic or cationic surfactant, e.g. dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid, with agitation under acidic or basic conditions, the amount of silane employed being less than 10% by weight calculated on the combined weights of silane, water and surfactant unless the silane is added to the mixture of water and surfactant at the rate of less than 1 mol of silane per hour in which case up to 35% by weight of silane may be used. The composition may be in the form of an aerosol or may be incorporated into a carpet cleaning shampoo comprising a mixture of 3 parts by weight of the sodium salt of lauryl sarcosine and 1 part by weight of sodium lauryl sulphonate.</p> |
