A metering device for dissolving a solid substance in a diverted partial stream of liquid comprises a housing with a coupling for the container for solid material to be dissolved. A 1st flow path has an inlet for the diverted stream and an outlet extending through the coupling into the container. A storage chamber for fresh liquid is in flow connection with the 1st flow path. A 2nd flow path extends also through the coupling and has an inlet for solution from the container. The outlet of the 1st and the inlet of the 2nd flow path are arranged at different distances from the coupling such that one extends beyond the coupling to permit insulated flow of the diverted stream.
