<p>The method involves operating an internal combustion engine with an air-fuel ratio to completely fill an oxygen accumulator of an oxidation catalytic converter. The engine is again operated with a constant air-fuel ratio, where a balancing of discharge of the oxygen in the converter is carried out by an oxygen load sensor. An oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of the converter is tested based on the balancing of oxygen discharge.</p>
