Cardenolide and bufadienolide 3-(2',3'-dides- - oxyglycosides) prepn

Cpds. of formula (2): (where R is a steroid residue of the 3-hydroxycardenolide or 3-hydroxybufadienolide series; r1 is H or both R1's together form an oxido radical; R2 is a (cyclo)aliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic acyl or alkyl radical or H; and R3 is H, methyl or Ch2Or2) are prepd. from cardenolide- and bufadienolide 3- 2', 3'-didesoxy DELTA 2'(3')-glycosides of formula (II): either by (a) reacting (II) with organic percarboxylic acids, or (b) when R is 3-hydroxycardenolide, catalytically hydrogenating (II) in presence of metal catalysts, and opt., when R2 is acyl, alkali-saponifying the acyl group, or, when R2 is H, acylating or etherifying the OH group. Cpds. (I) have cardiotonic activity (positive inotropic effect) and also diuretic properties.
