An assembly separates metal particles from a liquid used as a combined cooling and lubricant in a machining process. In a first operating mode a pump (13) delivers fluid and particles to a filter (6). In a second operating mode the filter is cleaned by reverse flush using gas from a container (10) that is pressurized at intervals by the pump. The operating mode is selected by a sensor (15) and valves (16, 17, 19). The filter (16) is a cylindrical unit with a spinning inner hydraulic or pneumatic spray jet (5) discharging at a tangent to the cylinder (6).
