During manufacture of a tyre for motor vehicles, one or more structural elements (8, 9, 10, 11) of elastomeric 5 material, such as a tread band (8) provided with a respective under-layer (9), are manufactured by laying a continuous elongated element (117) on the carcass structure (2) or other forming support, which elongated element is longitudinally divided into a first and a 10 second mutually-coupled portions (125, 126) that are obtained through extrusion of two different elastomeric materials coming from respective extruders (120, 121) leading off to a common extrusion die (119) .
