A fluid transfer assembly for supplying fluid to a rotary member from a stationary encircling collar member comprises, in one of the members a fluid supply passage leading to an annular groove, and in the other member a port registering with the groove and leading to a further fluid passage, the collar member being maintained in floating concentric relation to the rotary member by a circular series of hydrostatic bearings. Two annular grooves 154, 156 in a collar 140 are supplied with low-pressure hydraulic fluid for transfer through ports 160, 162 to internal passages 136, (138) in a rotary sleeve 122 forming part of spindle clamping apparatus in a machine tool (see Division B3). Two annular sets of hydrostatic bearings 180 are arranged on the inner surface of the collar at either side of the grooves 154, 156, each bearing 180 being supplied with hydraulic fluid under pressure through a restrictive orifice 203. The orifices provide a regulatory effect to the pressure in the various bearings which in turn provides an automatic self-centring effect on the collar as a whole. |
