The temperature of a motor 14 is estimated from the ambient temperature 22; the motor current 18, the time 20 that the current is applied to the motor, and a thermal property 24. When the estimated temperature of the motor 14 exceeds a safe operating temperature a voltage applied to the motor by controller 16 is reduced. The voltage applied to motor 14 may be increased when the estimated temperature returns to a value that is no greater than the safe operating temperature. Temperature estimator 12 and motor controller 16 may be integrated, may comprise a microprocessor, and may utilise an algorithm. Motor 14 may be used to control the position of an automotive seat. |
