PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce operating noise caused by collision of a shoe with a main rope 3 in operating a rope brake 52, in the rope brake comprising the main rope 3 wound on a sieve 42 for reciprocating a car 1 or the like, and a driving device having a belt transmission mechanism 51 for pressing a circular arc area of the main rope 3 toward the sieve 42 to drive it. SOLUTION: The shoe of this rope brake 52 is a narrow side of a belt having a structure same as or similar to a belt 50 of the belt transmission mechanism 51, and its rubber hardness is set to about 50-90 degrees, thus the operating noise in operating the rope brake 52 can be reduced.
