The method involves measuring visibility of an object and contamination on a sensor surface. A drive assistance device is switched-off or reset to a standard value, after the failure of an automatic cleaning device for the surface. Function range of the assistance device is fully provided, when the measured contamination is below a contamination threshold value and the measured visibility is above an upper visibility threshold value. The function range of the drive assistance device is limited, when the measured contamination is below the contamination threshold value and the measured visibility is below the upper visibility threshold value. The drive assistance device is completely switched-off, when the measured contamination is below the contamination threshold value and the measured visibility is below a lower visibility threshold value.
