A distributer valve for a fuel-injection pump comprises a rotary valve member 10 driven by the pump cam-shaft 1 and engaged by a fixed valve member 7 and a non-statable but axially-movable valve member 12, a spring 14 biasing member 12 against member 10, and the inter-engaging faces of the valve members being hydraulically balanced by the fuel pressure. Member 10 controls fuel flow from a supply pump to the injection pump, supply fuel entering chamber 16 via inlet 17 and passing via passages 18, 19, 20 to a chamber 21 from which four passages 22 radiate and, on rotation of member 10, sequentially register with injection pump inlet/outlet 24 during the injection pump suction stroke. Four radial recesses 23 in member 10 sequentially register with inlet/outlet 24 during the injection pump delivery stroke, and transmit the pump delivery to a chamber 26 communicating via passage 27 with a metering member. Fuel from the metering member passes through passages 28,15 and 30 to a recess 31 in member 10. Recess 31 has a radial extension 32 which, diving station of member 10, sequentially registers with a plurality of passages 33 leading to the engine cylinders. Hydraulic balancing is effected by dividing the adjacent faces of the valve members into pairs of lands by annular grooves 37 and (35) (39) Fig 3 (not shown) in the faces of valve member 10, the lands being subjected directly and via passages 36, 38 to the pressure of the fuel delivered from the injection pump to the metering member and to the pressure of the fuel delivered from the metering member to the cylinders. The end face 12b of valve member 12 is subjected to the fuel pressure from the metering member and a face 41 on member 12 is subjected to the injection pump delivery pressure in chamber 26 to balance pressure forces acting between members 10 and 12. In the Fig. 6 embodiment, which is of reduced bulk, balancing pressure acts between an intermediate cap 114 and valve member 112, and an alternative arrangement of the lands between valve members 112 and 110 is provided.
