<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk substrate producing method which is implemented in a manner of controlling a surface roughness and reducing a surface blemish only by carrying out polishing steps, and to provide a magnetic disk producing method. <P>SOLUTION: In the process of polishing a glass substrate, first the glass substrate is polished with polishing slurry containing abrasive grain, and further polished with water rinse liquid containing no abrasive grain so as to make a surface roughness Ra of the glass substrate to 4 to 8Å.
