The invention relates to a gauge rod used as a connector for rails of a track. The gauge rod comprises a brace whose ends have fastening parts for connecting to the rails and has a sheath made of elastic insulating material. The sheath has an unbroken closed surface made of plastic. This gauge rod can be provided at the factory as a finished part with a water-tight, foamed sheath made of, for example, a polyurethane foam, or the sheath can be applied in-situ as a multilayer covering.
