PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely prevent damage to the peripheral sides of a loading plate when the uncontrollable operation of a drive source for raising the loading plate for recording paper occurs not only when a large quantity of recording paper is loaded but also a small quantity of recording paper is loaded in a sheet feeder and easily realize the sheet feeder without complicating the structure of the sheet feeder. SOLUTION: This sheet feeder 1 comprises the loading plate 2 for loading the recording paper 8 thereon, the drive source 3 for raising and lowering the loading plate, a detection means 4 detecting that the uppermost recording paper 8 loaded on the loading plate 2 is positioned at a paper supply height, and a control means 5 providing a driving instruction for the drive source 3 so as to raise the loading plate 2 until the recording paper is detected by the detection means 4 and changing a drive torque generated by the drive source 3 according to the movement amount of the loading plate 2 from a paper loadable position.
