PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of an image display device in which an improvement in productivity is obtained by simplifying a process in the sealing of a rear substrate and a front substrate through a side wall, and an image display device. SOLUTION: This manufacturing method is for an image display device which comprises a display panel 10 having a rear substrate 4, a front substrate 2 arranged opposed to the rear substrate, and a frame shape side wall 6 which is interposed along the peripheral edge of the rear substrate and the front substrate, and has a space between the rear substrate and the front substrate, and a plurality of display elements 16 installed to this display panel. The method is provided with a process of filling molten indium 20b in a vacuum atmosphere on the sealing face of the side wall fitted to the rear substrate and a process of sealing the front substrate and the rear substrate through the side wall by attaching the sealing face of the front substrate to the molten indium and pressurizing the front substrate on the rear substrate, while maintaining the vacuum atmosphere.
