PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an env gene of a new human endogenous retrovirus related to onset of IgA nephropathy.

SOLUTION: An HC2env gene (env gene of the human endogenous retrovirus HC2) is disclosed. One or several bases therein may be deleted, substituted or added. The onset of the IgA nephropathy is a mechanism in which the HC2env gene is expressed to produce an HC2ENV protein that is an expression product thereof. When a human has an antibody reactive with the HC2ENV protein by an autoimmune mechanism, an immunoreactive conjugate of the antibody deposits in a glomerular mesangium region to cause chronic inflammatory reactions.
