PURPOSE:To improve the operability during the sheet feed by calculating the transfer quantity required for the partial projection of the inserted sheet based on the transfer quantity of the preceding sheet in the remainder control region when the sheet is inserted through a manual insertion port. CONSTITUTION:If a sheet other than the sheets stacked on a sheet feeder 40 is to be recorded, the sheet is inserted through a manual insertion port 8 when the paper lamp on an operation panel is lit, i.e., after the rear end of the preceding sheet has passed a no-sheet detecting sensor (point B), then a manual insertion mode is obtained. After the succeeding sheet is inserted through the manual insertion port 8, how many lines of the sheet feed have been transferred is detected in the remainder control region (point B to point D), the transfer quantity required for the partial advance of the succeeding sheet (until it reaches the recording start point E) is calculated based on this detected value, and the succeeding sheet is transferred by the calculated transfer quantity to perform the partial advance correctly.
