PURPOSE:To manufacture a superconducting wire having a high current density and capable of being made into a fine wire by making a material which is to become a ceramic superconductor by oxidation into a wire material, covering it with a noble metal, and then heat-treating it in an oxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:An alloy YBa2Cu3 is melted and cast into a rod shape. The rod undergoes a swaging, rolling and wire-drawing processes to be manufactured into a fine wire. The fine wire is then silver-plated and heated at a temperature below the melting point of the silver in an oxidizing atmosphere. While the YBa2Cu3 alloy is oxidized to become a ceramic superconductor through the heat treatment, the presence of the silver restricts the supply of oxygen and prevents the superconductor from becoming powder or from being burned to form crystals of fine perovskite. Further pressurizing an expansion pressure during oxidation by the creep of the silver, growth of the ceramic is accelerated under a high pressure. In this way it is possible to manufacture a superconductive wire having a higher current density and capable of being wire-drawn to a fine wire. |
