<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To mount an encoder on a rotating shaft properly in a synchronous motor controlling device. <P>SOLUTION: The synchronous motor controlling device is provided with a magnetic-pole initial phase setting means. A constant current is made to flow in a synchronous motor; and an initial phase offset value is calculated from the relation of a start position, a stop position, and a Z-phase position during the period when the electrical angle completes a rotation of one cycle. The number of processes of mounting the encoder can be reduced by automatic setting, and the improvement of the encoder mounting accuracy allows the satisfactory control of the motor.
