Disclosed is a method and apparatus for balancing a gemstone working member. The method is a sequence of predefined operations that uses masses attached to the working member to introduce a certain unbalance and as balancing masses. The apparatus is part of a gemstone working machine and uses an accelerometer as a vibration sensor. It receives the amplitude of the introduced vibrations and provides the counterweight values and their angular positions.
