METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE IGNITION DELAY AFTER A FUEL INJECTION SIGNAL

The invention relates to a method for determining the ignition delay after a fuel injection signal (S) in a self-igniting internal combustion engine by evaluation of an ionic current signal. In order to compensate for different ignition delays for different fuels, the fuel injection signal (S) is shifted temporally or in terms of the injection angle according to the time difference or angle difference between the respective detected ionic current signal (Ii) and a predetermined standard ionic current signal or a time or angle signal corresponding thereto. The inventive method allows, within the scope of a control operation, to automatically adapt the engine to fuels of different qualities and compositions.
