PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a quartz glass tube for an optical fiber capable of minimizing the misalignment between the center of the striae of the layered structure and that of the quartz glass tube after grinding, and an optical fiber preform and an optical fiber having a good fiber curl value by using the quartz tube for an optical fiber obtained by the manufacturng method. SOLUTION: In this method of manufacturing a quartz glass tube for an optical fiber, outer surface is ground by supporting the inner diameter at the shape-stable part inner side than the shape-unstable part at both ends of a mother ingot, then the inner surface is ground by supporting the outer surface already ground. By this method, a quartz glass tube whose misalignment between the center of the concentric layered striae observed in its cross section and the center of the outer diameter of the quartz glass tube after grinding is not greater than 1% of the outer diameter of the quartz glass tube can be obtained. With this quartz glass tube, an optical fiber having a fiber curl of not smaller than 20 m can be manufactured. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
