PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus, capable of minutely saving power by recognizing the size of an original document when an operator sets the width of a form or the automatic width of a form on an operation panel for original document size detection, and individually controlling the power supply of a divided contact type image sensor. SOLUTION: This image reading apparatus 100 is provided with an original document size detecting sensor 10 for detecting the size of an original document, an original document insertion detecting means 11 for detecting the insertion of the original document, an original document resist detecting sensor 12 for detecting the front end and rear end of the original document, a system control device 20 for executing and controlling a series of processes, an operation unit 22 as an operation means for setting the form width to the device 20, a reading control circuit 15 performing reading control of the original document, a drive control circuit 13 for transmitting a signal of original document transport, a scanner driving device 14 for transporting the original document and divided contact type image sensors CIS-A16a, to CIS-E16e reading the original document, and a power source device 19 for supplying power source to turn on the LEDs of the CISs.
