PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner with which the variation in the position of luminous flux on a luminous flux detector due to an inclination error of a reflection face of a rotating polygon mirror is reduced by a simple structure and the scanning position synchronization accuracy is increased, and to provide an image forming apparatus using the optical scanner. SOLUTION: By arranging the luminous flux detector 26 at a position P1 which is conjugate with a reflection face 230 of the rotating polygon mirror 23 in a subscanning direction, namely a focal point of a scanning optical element 240 which takes the reflection face 230 of the rotating polygon mirror 23 as an object point, the variation in the position of the luminous flux position on the luminous flux detector 26 due to the inclination error of the reflection face 230 of the rotating polygon mirror 23 is reduced.
