PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric conversion element that is excellent in photoelectric conversion efficiency, sensitivity, and color separation while the element is reduced in size, and to provide an image pickup element using the conversion element. SOLUTION: The photoelectric conversion element has a pair of electrodes 21 and 22 and a laminated photosensitive layer 7 formed between the electrodes 21 and 22. The laminated photosensitive layer 7 is composed of two or more p-type organic semiconductor layers 3p and an n-type organic semiconductor layer 3n in heterojunction, and, the direction of the lamination of the layer 7 is almost perpendicular to the surface of the photoelectric conversion element.
