PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technnique capable of preventing cleaning failure caused by the initialization processing of a cleaner in an image forming apparatus in which the cleaner is forcibly made abut on an intermediate transfer medium, then subsequently away from the intermediate transfer medium to execute the initialization processing of the cleaner. SOLUTION: While a transfer inhibition area 714 is positioned in a cleaning position Pc, the cleaner 761 is forcibly made abut on an intermediate transfer belt 71, then away from the intermediate transfer belt 71, the cleaner 761 is positioned to the initial position. Accordingly, although the cleaner 761 is made abtt on the intermediate transfer belt 71 during the initialization processing of the cleaner, a toner image does not exist at the abutting position, and therefore the cleaner 761 is kept in a clean state without causing any tonner sticking to the cleaner 761.
