The video camera (2) detects light signals (L) which are passed to processing units. Following digital conversion (3), a data compressor (4) is used which has a variable compression factor which is dependent on the information rate (N). The compression factor is set by an adjustment circuit (8) in the processor. The compressed information is passed to a memory chip (5) which has a number of memory zones. The digital information is then passed via an interface to an output circuit.
