PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a clad glass composition for a gradient index rod lens which, of course, can stably spin a mother glass rod of the gradient index rod lens that is comprised of a glass composition containing no PbO, while considering to prevent stray light as a rod lens. SOLUTION: The clad glass composition contains Li as a material that forms the gradient index, and coats a mother glass rod for the gradient index rod lens that contains no lead, wherein the content of an alkali metal oxide and an alkaline earth metal oxide in the glass composition is specified, and the glass composition substantially contains no lead, but contains a coloring agent, and the index of refraction of the glass composition is set to 1.56-1.68.
