<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a catalyst for reaction of a heterogeneous system to be used in synthesis of organic low and high molecular weight compounds, which achieves a high yield, eliminates the need of a bleaching purification process owing to no occurrence of coloration of products and precise control of the molecular weight, the distribution of molecular weights and chemical structures of products and produces less waste, and to provide a method for synthesizing an organic compound by using the catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: The catalyst contains (A) a metal compound(s) containing at least one metal element selected from the groups 4-12 elements in the long periodic table and (B) a polymer gel supporting a ligand capable of coordinating with the metal element.
