PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always form images in stabilized transfer conditions even when using a large recording material as in the case of using a small one by strongly polishing the largely damaged film areas but lightly polishing the less damaged areas on the intermediate transfer member (endless belt-like intermediate transfer member) to recover its overall uniform surface. SOLUTION: An image forming device first transfers the toner image formed on a photo conductor to the intermediate transfer member, then transfers the toner image transferred on the intermediate transfer member to a recording material. The device has a polishing means which has a moving means and a pressure roller to polish the surface of the above intermediate transfer member by pressing and relatively moving the polishing material on it in the rotating direction and changes the pressure of the roller on the surface depending on the positions, i.e. the center and edges of the surface perpendicular to the rotating direction of the above intermediate transfer member.
