<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spray coating method of a surface layer of recording paper by which check of spray condition is easy, there is few loss of a supporting body and a coating liquid, coating failure due to fall of a liquid drop and fluttering of the supporting body can be prevented and coating can be performed without anxiety for a long time when the surface layer is formed to manufacture recording paper by applying the coating liquid with a spray coating apparatus on at least one layer of an ink absorbing layer formed on the supporting body and further to provide the spray coating apparatus for coating the surface layer and the recording paper. <P>SOLUTION: In the spray coating method by which the surface layer is formed with a spray coating apparatus on the ink absorbing layer formed on the supporting body, the spray coating apparatus is disposed outside a drying process and has a spray coater, a coating liquid anti-scattering means and a moving means. Before applying, the spray coater is moved to a waiting position and after the spray condition of the coating liquid is checked by a monitoring means, the spray coater is moved to a coating position.
