METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR POWER LEVEL CONTROL AND/OR CONTRAST CONTROL IN DISPLAY DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling the power level and/or the contrast in a display device having a plurality of luminous elements corresponding to the color components of the pixels of a picture.

SOLUTION: The luminance generated by each of luminous elements is based on the intensity of the signal supplied to the luminous elements and the power level and/or contrast for each picture is controlled by adjusting the intensity of the signal to be supplied to each luminous element. The intensity of the signal to be supplied to each luminous element is based on a reference signal and the adjustment of the intensity of the signal is performed by adjusting the level of the reference signal. The average output level APL of the input picture is calculated and an adjustment factor to be applied to the intensity of the signal in order that the contrast is equal to the required contrast is calculated and is applied to the reference signa. A nonlinear transformation 44 is applied to the reference signal in order to increase the amplitude of the reference signal of the low signal and the inverse transformation is applied to the picture signal.
