PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a red fluorescent substance having excellent luminous efficiency by a long wavelength UV-excited light source, and also having a small uniform particle size; and to provide a method for producing the red fluorescent substance. SOLUTION: The red fluorescent substance is represented by (Li<SB>(2-z)-x</SB>M<SB>x</SB>)(AO<SB>4</SB>)<SB>y</SB>:Eu<SB>z</SB>, Sm<SB>q</SB>(M is K, Mg, Na, Ca, Sr or Ba; A is Mo or W; 0≤x≤2; 0.5≤y≤5; 0.01≤z≤1.5; 0.001≤q≤1.0; and x+y≤2), has a fusing agent containing a B compound or the like such as B<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>in a content of 0.0001-20 mass%, and is constituted of particles having 3-20μm particle size. The red fluorescent substance is produced by dispersing a Li, M, A, Eu and Sm-containing compound and the fusing agent in a solvent to provide a slurry, and firing the slurry.
