PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium for high density recording which is nearly free from printing at the reverse side, has satisfactory roll-up appearance and satisfactory head contact and has both high electromagnetic transducing characteristics and excellent running durability. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer including ferromagnetic powder and a binder on one surface of a non-magnetic substrate and a back coat layer on the other surface. The surface of the back coat layer has 20 to 60 pieces/μm<SP>2</SP>density of protrusions having≥50 nm and <100 nm height and 0.2 to 1 pieces/μm<SP>2</SP>density of protrusions having 100 to 500 nm height measured by an atomic force microscope (AFM) and the magnetic layer has 50 to 100 kgf/mm<SP>2</SP>plastic deformation hardness at 5 mgf load.
