PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element having monostable ferroelectric liquid crystal in uniform mono-domain orientation in a cell gap. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element includes: a liquid crystal layer formed by a liquid crystal material infused between two substrates, at least one of which has an orientation film, and exhibiting monostable state having chiral smectic-C phase; and an electrode for applying an electric field to the liquid crystal layer. A plurality of barriers are provided in the liquid crystal layer and the molecule direction of the liquid crystal material in the monostable state is almost identical to the extension direction of the barriers.
