HYDROGEN STORAGE AND SUPPLY METHOD

A method of storing and supplying a gaseous hydrogen product (10) to a pipeline (12) under a product purity specification in which a hydrogen stream (30) made up of gaseous hydrogen is compressed (32) to form a compressed hydrogen stream (34) and introduced into a salt cavern (36) for storage. A crude hydrogen stream (40; 41), contaminated from storage in the salt cavern (36) is recovered and purified (38; 38') by sufficiently removing at least carbon dioxide and water vapor to produce a hydrogen product stream (10) having an impurity level at or below the product purity specification. The hydrogen product stream (10) is supplied back to the pipeline (12). Alternatively, during periods of low demand, hydrogen produced by a production facility (20) is both purified (38') and supplied to the pipeline (12) and stored in the salt cavern (36). During high demand period, both the output of the production facility (22) and hydrogen (40) retrieved from the salt cavern (36) are purified (38') and supplied to the pipeline (12).
