PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for which an electrifying system by near field discharge is employed and which can prevent the deterioration of a photoreceptor surface due to near field discharge, is good in durability even in a process required to make a high speed/small cycle time in time per printing process and printing process one cycle, and can form a stable image without the occurrence of a blade inversion and abnormal image. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus of the configuration equipped with the moving photoreceptor 1, a protective substance coating applicator 30 which moves in abutment on its surface and supplies a protective substance thereto, an electrifying unit 2 which is arranged in contact with or in proximity to the photoreceptor and electrifies the photoreceptor by electric discharge due to voltage application including AC, an exposure means 3 which forms an electrostatic latent image, and a development device 4 which develops the electrostatic latent image by toner is provided. An appropriate amount of the protective substance existing on the surface of the photoreceptor in the region where electricity is discharged is calculated from the Zn element ratio of zinc stearate measured by an XPS and is set.
