<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which improves cooling efficiency and stably projects images with high saturated colors. <P>SOLUTION: This projector has a plurality of light modulating devices 441 to modulate red, green and blue light from a light source, a color mixing optical system to put modulated light together to form optical images, a projection optical system to magnify optical images to project, and an optical element to convert the light flux. Further, it is provided with a cooling unit 6 to circulate liquid cooling medium to cool at least either the optical element or the light modulating devices 441. This cooling unit 6 has a cooling medium vessel 63 to fill the cooling medium. The cooling medium vessel 63 covers the areas the light flux from the light source passes and has an opening for the light flux to pass through the cooling medium.
