PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide carbon nanotubes modified by polymers at a side surface and both terminals, and a method of modifying the surface of carbon nanotubes industrially favorably without imparting damages to a structure of the carbon nanotubes. SOLUTION: This polymer-modified nanoscale carbon tube is made by graft polymerizing a monomer such as a (meth)acrylate or a styrene on a reaction product of the nanoscale carbon tube and an azide compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is H or a 1-4C alkyl group, R<SP>2</SP>is a carbonyl group (-CO-) or a group of -CO-C<SB>m</SB>H<SB>2m</SB>-C<SB>6</SB>H<SB>4</SB>-(m=0-4), and X is a halogen atom) using a living radical polymerization method.
