PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet separation device capable of properly controlling a torque given to a separation roll. SOLUTION: This sheet separation device comprises a carrying roll, the separation roll, a carrying torque generating means imparting a carrying torque to the carrying roll, a separation torque generating means controlling the magnitude of a separation torque, a speed measuring means measuring the rotational speed of the separation roll, a storage means storing the target rotational speed of the separation roll, a control means outputting control signals controlling the separation torque generating means based on a difference between the rotational speed measured by the speed measuring means and the target rotational speed stored in the storage means, a torque limiting means limiting control signals so that the separation torque generated by a separation roll drive means does not exceed a threshold, and a separating and driving means ouputting drive signals driving the separation torque generating means based on the control signals outputted from the torque limiting means.
