For the treatment of used and impure drinking and industrial water, after primary clarification it is fed by a pump (2) into a settling pit (1) in the bioreactor (5) with a filter module of one or more ceramic filter membranes (4) and a lower aeration unit (7). The aeration system has one or more pumps to give a movement of air or an air/gas mixture at intervals under electronic control. The permeate within the filter membranes is passed by a pump (6) into a permeate tank (8). When a given flow resistance is registered, permeate is pumped back from the tank through the filter membranes to clean their surfaces. The bioreactor has a carrier bed or cartridge (3) to hold microorganisms to break down hazardous matter. The bioreactor is of a plastics material.
