PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a chloromethyl group-bearing compound which is capable of easily separating the chloromethyl group-bearing compound from its ester and is capable of recycling the ester, when the chloromethyl group-bearing compound is produced from a polyhydric alcohol. SOLUTION: When the chloromethyl group-bearing compound is produced from a polyhydric alcohol represented by formula (1): R<SB>m</SB>C(CH<SB>2</SB>OH)<SB>n</SB>(wherein m is 0, 1 or 2; n is 4, 3 or 2; and m + n = 4; R is independently H or a 1-8C alkyl which may be substituted), an 8 or more C organic acid is used, whereby the organic acid ester of the chloromethyl group-bearing compound can be reused without adverse effect on the chlorination reaction of the polyhydric alcohol and the chloromethyl group-bearing compound is readily obtained with ester contamination reduced.
