An elevator apparatus wherein a car and first and second balance weights are lifted in a hoistway. A pair of car guide rails guiding the lifting of the car are installed in the hoistway. The car comprises first and second side surface parts opposed to each other. The car guide rails are installed to face the first and second side surface parts. The first and second balance weights are disposed on the front side of the car guide rails in the car depth direction. A first hoist is disposed just above the first balance weight. A second hoist is disposed just above the second balance weight.
