PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystalline compound having a 6-membered ring lactone skeleton and a dielectric constant negative anisotropy with a large absolute value, an n-type liquid crystalline composition by using the same and a liquid crystalline displaying element of a VA (vertical alignment) method by using the liquid crystalline composition as a constituting member. SOLUTION: This compound expressed by general formula (1), the liquid crystalline composition by using the same and the liquid crystalline displaying element by using the composition are provided. The compound has characteristics of having the negative dielectric constant anisotropy, a large absolute value of the same, and a small anisotropy in its refractive index. The liquid crystalline composition and the liquid crystalline displaying device by using the compound as a constituting member are useful as the liquid crystalline displaying element of a vertically aligned type, an IPS, etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
