PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of engaging noise by preventing backlash between tooth parts of a gear of a speed reduction gear mechanism from being increased, even in a secular use. SOLUTION: This device drives an electric motor 5 according to an operation of a steering member 1 to assist the steering. The device is provided with the speed reduction gear mechanism 6 including a driving gear 61 connected to a rotary shaft 5a of the electric motor 5 and a driven gear 62 engaged with the driving gear 61, a backlash regulating means 9 for regulating backlash between the driving gear 61 and the driven gear 62, a traveling measuring means 15 for measuring a traveling process of a vehicle, and a regulation control means 321 (a CPU of a microcomputer 32) for controlling a regulating operation of the backlash regulating means 9 according to the traveling process.
