The invention relates to novel methods and compositions for the detection of analytes using the nuclear reorganization energy, lambda, of an electron transfer process. In particular, the present invention provides probes of the outer-sphere environment of a redox center and methods of correlating changes in electrochemical properties to characterize the same.
