PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To utilize a preheating region being used for preheating a thermal head in a process preceding image formation and discarded as a cutting strip in a printer for forming an image using the thermal head. SOLUTION: An image formation control section 12 preheats arrays in a thermal head 6 located at the opposite ends in the main scanning direction of a color thermal recoding sheet 2, and prints arbitrary information by heating the arrays between the opposite ends at the time of preheating. A region 74 colored by preheating and an uncolored region printed with the arbitrary information are thereby formed in the preheated regions 71 and 73 of the color thermal recoding sheet 2, and information can be provided to a user by using the cutting strip 76 being discarded. The information being printed in the uncolored region 75 is acquired by reading out a pattern 23 formed on the end face of the core 21 of a recording sheet roll 3 through a pattern sensor 57.
