PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus which can suppress blood flow artifacts and fat signals and can perform the imaging without deteriorating water element signals. SOLUTION: After applying a high frequency magnetic field for the non-space-selective inversion excitation to a subject in the space to be imaged, and successively applying a high frequency magnetic field for the selective inversion excitation to a region of the subject including cross sections to be imaged of the subject, this apparatus applies a suppressive magnetic field pulse in order to selectively suppress the magnetized signals of a predetermined substance, and then performs the imaging pulse sequence for the cross section to be imaged. The double applications of inversion excitation high frequency magnetic field can suppress the blood flow artifacts. The suppressive magnetic field pulse can suppress the magnetized signals of a specific substance (fat, for example), so that the apparatus can perform the imaging effectively excluding the specific substance. By the use of the suppressive magnetic field pulse, the apparatus does not cause deterioration in water element signals comparinig with the conventional technique using a longitudinal relaxation in magnetization.
